Empowering Women in Japan to be Resilient - Looking Back + Ahead with FEW Japan

FEW (For Empowering Women) Group in Japan is now celebrating its 40th year! Here I talk with the amazing women on the board team about some of the history (herstory) of the group, projects and events, speakers, peer-support, transitions online during COVID19 and the great work the organization has been doing and is planning to do in the future as they mark its 40th year. Watch the Talk on YouTube

In the beginning I ask a silly question about whether FEW is still needed and expected a quick OF COURSE answer, but President Jackie Steele went into a lot of detail about the rationale (thank you Jackie). There is so much need for women support networks in Japan and around the world - especially Japan- as there is still a lot of discrimination and lack of empowerment and equality happening in traditional work environments here.

We talk about the positive influence of peer support, virtual lunches, diverse insights from speakers at various stages and styles of career in Japan, the benefits of mentoring programs and the fun of spending time with other women in Japan finding connections through networking events and activities. Tia Haygood talked of the fundraising activities and charity support events the group has been doing as well as finding corporate sponsorship that matches the FEW vision.

Kyoko Nagano talks of her events, virtual lunch organization and hopes that more Japanese women will also feel encouraged to join the group in future. Terri Macmillan talks about the events and activities she has appreciated over the years at FEW as well as the positive influence of international businesses in Japan bringing a higher standard of gender equality and opportunities for women in their careers.
